somebenefitstooperatinginthewintersuchasbetteraccesstoremotelocationsandeasierdeliveryofmaterials.IfwecanwewillactuallyleavesomejobsuntilthewintersetsinsaysHay.Whenwelaypipelinesinthewinteryoucanjustsetthepipeacrosstheice.Youdonthavetoworryaboutgettingbargesinorbeconcernedaboutwindydays.Infactforsomeofthejobswedowecantevengetintothesiteuntilitfreezesbecauseoftheneedforiceroadsitsnotlikeyoucanflyinabunchofeight-inchpipe.WhistlingwindsontheprairiesWinterdivingincentralCanadaisforthemostpartthesameasdivinginanyoftheothercoldwaterconditionsacrossthenationatleastbelowthesurface.Ontheicehoweverthebarrensurroundinglandscapeabovethetree-lineprovidesanumberofissuesfordivingcrews.AtsomeoftheremotesitesyouareupagainstmanyofthesamethingsasinotherareasexceptthatitmightbecoldersaysGarthHiebertpresidentofDominionDivers.Thewindisprettymuchunimpededforthousandsofmilesastherearentanytreestospeakof.Onacoldwind-sweptstretchoflakewithverylittlesnowinsulationyouresometimesforcedtocuticeasthickasfivefeetjusttogetdownatthewater.Goingintotheriversoftheprairiescanbedemandingonthediverevenatthebestoftimes.Inthesummerthewatertendstobecloggedwithsiltandsedimentalmostcompletelyabsorbingthelightfromabove.Itsnotmuchbetterinthewinterwhenthevisibilityincreasesslightlybecauseoficeallowingthedivertoseeacoupleofinchesinanydirection.Additionallythetemperatureofthewaterseemstodropasitmovespastthediversimulatingawind-chillbelowthesurface.Ifyouareworkinginshallowerdepthsandespeciallyinmovingwaterthewaterseemstobeabletogetsuper-chilledandcanactuallygetlowerthanitnormallywouldsaysHiebert.Youdefinitelytendtofeelthedifference.Youneedtokeepactivebecauseifyouarenotworkinghardyoureallydogetcolderfaster.Whenyoucombineextremelycoldweatherconditionswithquicklymovingwaterlikewhenitflowsoverthetopofadamicecanpropagateandformwhatiscalledfrazzleice.Thisfrazzleicethenclumpsintoballsofslushwhichcanposearealproblemforhydrogeneratingstationsbyblockingintakevalves.TheseslushballsthatformareverystickyandveryheavysaysHiebert.Sometimesitsmucheasiertogetintotheslushthangetoutofitjustbecauseofhowheavyitis.Youcanfindyourselfhavingtogothroughfromanywherebetweenfiveto10feetofthisstuff.Andbecausetheslushislighterthanthewaterittendstobesuspendedtowardthesurface.ItisreallymorelikedivingthroughaSlurpeethanopenwater.TrickytidesinBCSomemightsaythatBritishColumbiaisoftenlookeddownuponbyfellowCanadiansforhavingamildersomemightevensaynon-existentwinterwhencomparedtotherestofthecountry.WhileaveragetemperatureswillnotdroptotheextremelowsoftheirprovincialneighboursBCdoeshaveitsfairshareofcoldwinterconditions.TheverylargelakessuchastheOkanaganmayhavesomefreezingontheshorelinebutrarelytowardthemiddlesaysGlennCostellopresidentofVancouver-basedCanPacDiversInc.Itjusthardlyevergetscoldenoughtoputicecoveroverthewholelake.ButwhenyougetintonorthernBCorwithsmallerlakesthatsadifferentthingaltogetherandtheywillfreezeover.Alongthecoastdiverswillneedtocontendwithhighcurrentsroughseasandtidalforcesthatfluctuatewiththeseasons.Insomecasesthetidescancausethesurfacetoriseandfallupto15feetandcausesignificantproblemsfordiversthroughnarrowoutlets.InVancouverwegetfirstandsecondnarrowsandthetidewillrunuptosevenknotsthroughthemsaysCostello.Adiversimplycantworkinanythingpast1.5knots.Anythingabovethatandhewillbeholdingonbyhisfingernails.LikethemovingiceinQuebecadivercanbestprotecthimselffromthetidalinfluencesbybeingawareoftheconditionsinwhichheisdiving.BeingpreparedandknowledgeableonthecoverWhendivinginthecoldthereisalotmorepreparationanditcansometimestakehourslongertogetequipmentupandrunning.DivinginLakeErieinFebruary.PhotoprovidedbyASIGroupLtd.14www.cadc.caFallWinter2013PhotoprovidedbyExpertechMarine. TheCanadianAssociationofDivingContractors15ofupcomingweathertrendsisofparamountimportancetothediverinordertokeepoutofharmsway.PlummetingtemperaturesintheremoteArcticOver40percentofCanadastotallandmassisconsideredtobepartoftheArctic.ItisbarrentundrathatcapturestheessenceoftheCanadianwinterharshcoldandunforgiving.Itisalsoanareathatisincreasinglyfrequentedbydivingcompaniesthatarehopingtoinvestinthevastuntappedpotentialofthearea.SomeofthemajoreconomicmotivatorsfordiversintheArcticshiprepairandshiphusbandryoffshoredrillingsupportandtheinstallationandmaintenanceofmunicipaldrinkingwaterandsewagetreatmentsystemsinextremelyremoteconditions.InsomeoftheselittlevillagesthereisjustnothingtheresaysBillStarkmarineoperationsmanageratNorthernUnderwaterSystemsArcticDiversCanadianDetwatering.TherearefewlightsmaybeanadministratorandusuallyamemberoftheRCMP.Butotherthatthereisreallynothingupthereforsupport.ThislackoflogisticalsupportcreatesanumberofproblemsforadiverinthehighArctic.Somethingtakenforgrantedintheurbansouthsuchasobtainingmedicalassistanceincaseofemergencyishardertocomebyinthenorthandunfortunatelyhelpisnotalwaysjustaphonecallaway.Anytimethatadiveristhatmuchfurtherawayitcanchangeajobfromasimpletwo-daythingintoacomplexMovingicecanbedangerous.Diversmustevaluatethechangesinweathertoavoidbeingcaughtunawarebyerranticeflows.PhotoprovidedbyMVCOcan.SlushballswhicharelighterthanthewatertendtobesuspendedtowardthesurfaceandcanmakeitseemmorelikedivingthroughaSlurpeethanopenwater.PhotoprovidedbyExpertechMarine. two-weekthingandthatsjustthewayitissaysStark.ItsnotuncommonintheArcticfordaystopasswherecommercialflightsjustdonthappen.AnditsextremelycommonintheArctictohaveweatherconditionsthatwontallowahelicoptertotakeoff.Soanymedicalissuethatmayarisethroughdivingiscompoundedbytheremoteness.Fortunatelywehavenothadanyincidentstodate.Additionallytheisolationoftheregioncanresultinmechanicaldeficiencieswhenitcomestomakingrepairsonequipmentthatwillinevitablyfailduetotheextremecold.Becauseofthisitwouldbewiseforadivertobecomefamiliarwiththelocalsinthecommunityinwhichheoperates.ItellmyguystomakefriendswiththemechanicattheairstripandhellbeyourbestsourceforpartssaysStark.Ifthereisadoctorinthecommunitymakehimawareofyouandreasonablyawareofwhatyouaredoinguptheresothatheisnotsurprisedwhensomebodygetsdraggedinwithamedicalproblemrelatedtodiving.Beingthatfarnorthtemperaturesplummetandthenightsarelong.Thiswillcreateexcruciatingultra-coldconditionsfordivingcrews.Becauseofthiscoldalmostalloftheequipmentneedstobeshroudedorkeptindoorstoremainfunctional.Wevehadcrewsworkingat-60andyoujustcantgetalotdonebecausetheequipmentdoesntwanttoworkwhenitsthatcoldsaysStark.Youhavelessthanthreehoursofdaylightduringthewintersoyoufindyourselfworkingoffofheadlightsandlightstandardsmoreoftenthannot.Everythingisdrivenbytheconditionsupthere.Undertheicepackofupto30feetofpermanenticetheconditionsareforthemostpartexcellentwithavisibilityofupto200to300feetandwithgenerallynegligibletidalforces.IronicallyhoweverthewateroftheArcticOceanisntallthatmuchcolderwhencomparedtotherestofthecountryfallingtoapproximately-2.ItreallydoesntseemtomatterawholehellofalotwhetheritissaltwaterorfreshwateritwillstilltakethewarmthoutofyouthesamewaysaysStark.Waterisacaloricsinktransferringheat25timesfasterthanair.Waterat-2onyourskinfeelsjustlikegettingburned.Ifyouweretotakeyourgloveoffinthatkindofwateratthattemperatureyouwillhaveamatterofsecondsbeforeyouvebasicallygotauselesslumpofwoodonyourwrist.BattlingbrineacrossCanadaThefinalcoldwaterconditionthatwillposeachallengetodiversisnotuniquetoanyoneregionofCanada.Brineconditionscanbefoundacrossthecountryandarelocatedwherethereissimplyahighersalinitytothewaterwhetheritisinanoceanicorindustrialsetting.Thebrineitselfisdenseandhasahighspecificgravitymakingitmoredifficulttosubmerge.Alsothehigherconcentrationofcalciumchloridefoundinbrineallowsittodropwellbelow0onthecoverWhenitcomestomovingiceadiversbestprotectionfromtidalinfluencesisbeingawareoftheconditionsinwhichheisdiving.16www.cadc.caFallWinter2013PhotoprovidedbyCanadianWorkingDiversInstitute.
